Creating e-mail accounts via the Services variation:

Sometimes Outlook contains what is known as Services in the Tools menu instead of Accounts.  Outlook 2000 has both the Services version as well as the Accounts version; it depends on how Outlook 2000 was originally configured.

Below are screenshots showing how to set up an account in Outlook Services.

Note:  If you want to change 'Services' to 'Accounts', click here.

Click Tools and select Services from the menu.

The Services window opens.

If there were an account, it would be listed in the white box below.  Since there is not, click the Add button.

From the list, highlight Internet E-mail.

Click the OK button.

The Properties window opens to the General tab.  (Oh good!  It's familiar again.)

Mail Account  =  Give the mail account a name.  It doesn't matter what you call it; however, if you have more than one account (Work, Personal, Mom, Dad, Junior, etc.), you'll want to be descriptive.  I gave this one mail.ispname.com.

User Information:

Name  =  Your name or nickname.
E-mail address  =  Your full e-mail address.

Select the Servers tab.

Server Information:

Incoming mail (POP3)  =  The Incoming (POP3) mail server usually follows this format:  mail.ispname.com (or .net).  Replace the "ispname.com (or .net)" with your ISP's name.

Outgoing mail (SMTP)  =  The Outgoing (SMTP) mail server usually follows this format: mail.ispname.com (or .net).  Replace the "ispname.com (or .net)" with your ISP's name.

Incoming Mail Server:

Account name  =  Enter your e-mail username (everything before the @).
Password  =  Your password.  If you don't remember it, contact your ISP.

Outgoing Mail Server:

Important:  To send e-mail, you must enable SMTP Authentication.  This helps deter would-be spammers from spamming you.

To enable SMTP authentication, place a check next to My server requires authentication.

Click the Settings button.

The Outgoing Mail Server window opens.

Logon Information:

Select Log on using.

Account name  =  Enter your e-mail username (everything before the @).
Password  =  Enter the password of your e-mail account.

Important:  Passwords are case-sensitive.  Ensure your Caps Lock key is DISabled.

Check the box Remember password.

Click the OK button to save the configuration and to close the window.

Enabling Auto-Connect:

Select the Connection tab.

Ensure that Connect using my phone line selected.
In the field under Use the following Dial-Up Networking connection, select your Internet connection.

Select the Advanced tab.

Towards the bottom is Delivery.  You can choose to leave a copy of your e-mail on the server.

Important:  If you leave a copy on the server, it's a good idea to delete them periodically.  Otherwise the e-mail will build up and you won't have any room to receive more.

Click the OK button to save the configuration and to close the window.

Note: as shown below, you'll need to Exit and Log Off on the File menu for the settings to take affect.

Click OK.

The e-mail account is now in Outlook Services.  To modify the account, highlight it and select Properties.

Otherwise click OK.

Important:  Remember to Exit and Log Off on the File menu for the new settings to take affect.
